Check List For Transitioning From The Military To A Civilian Job

Going from the military back into the civilian world means that you will need to take some deliberate steps to get ready for the job market. Because of your own training, experiences, and time away from the civilian way of doing things, there will be a transition that you will need to go through to prepare yourself to reenter the civilian job world. Here are some of the things that will help you to prepare successfully so that you can easily make that transition.

List Your Strengths And Training

While you were in the military you went through a series of training programs to prepare you to do a job for the military. You need to sit down and list everything that comes to your mind that you now have experience for and that some employer may be interested in. This list should include both your training and your actual experience. You might even talk to some of your military buddies and get them to think of a couple of things that you might miss - including strengths of character you might have.

Decide On The Type Of Civilian Job You Want

The type of job you go after should allow you to use some of your training and strengths. Employers look for people that have training that will be similar to their needs. This means that your strengths should enable you to get a job in a similar field easier than others without that training.

One thing that you may want to especially consider is the opportunity you may have to enter into Federal jobs. With your training, military discipline, and other things, you are now a prime candidate to be able to land a good paying government job. They are looking for personnel who are ready to make that military transition. Special qualifications, such as security clearances, licenses, and permits that Uncle Sam gave you also prepare you to more easily get a job with the government.

Prepare A Professional Military Resume

A resume agency can help you prepare your professional military resume (civilian resume) to help you land that job. It will need to do much more than simply state the facts - it needs to make you stand out. With their expertise, professional resume writers can make yours a cut above the rest and shine in comparison. Your military resume (civilian resume) will highlight the most important features about your experience and make you look like someone that any employer would want in their employ. It is important to take this step because a potential employer will only have a few seconds to look at your military resume (civilian resume) and make his or her decision. A resume writer also knows what things an employer is going to look for.

Learn How To Successfully Conduct A Job Interview

The interview is something that you will have to do in order to get that job. While the resume can get you the interview, it is the interview that will get you either the job or the door. Knowing in advance what type of questions you might be asked and how to answer them is most important. Some questions will deal with your experience, some with your ability to learn new tasks, and, of course, some questions may deal with salary. You will need to learn when to ask questions and when not to ask, knowing how much to ask for, as well as how to ask can make or break that interview you wanted so bad. Also body language is important and so is your appearance - be sure to review what you know about these things before the interview.

Find Out How To Learn About The Job Opportunities

Although there are numerous job boards available, the truth is that many jobs are never listed. In fact, most are not. This means that you need more ways than one to be able to find out about that job opening that you are looking for. Many times jobs are only listed with certain job markets or staffing agencies. Other jobs can only be found through networking.

Military Resumes is a term that refers to resumes written for service members transitioning from a military career to the private or public sector. Military Resume Writers are specialized in military transition resumes. Military Resumes are written by specialists in translating military skills and experience into mainstream types of resumes.

Jobs
Your civilian job search may last longer than 30 days and you will need to have several different formats of your resume for the different jobs you’re applying for. Each resume will be created in different formats for you to use depending on the civilian jobs you are applying for. Each online application format has different requirements for resume length, number of jobs allowed to be described and number of characters allowed.

Resume
So you're leaving the service and are faced with the daunting task of developing your resume. Before writing your resume, do some soul-searching, research occupations and pinpoint a specific career path. Your resume should reflect excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills. While building a military resume, define your Civilian Job Objective in a clear way. This is often the hardest step for ex-military personnel, which is why it's so common to see military resumes span five pages or longer. If you fear a potential employer won't realize the significance of your military experience, make sure your resume clearly communicates the value that you bring to the table. Military resumes tend to be long and do not consolidate background and experience as it relates to the open position. Therefore, in most cases, military experience is best handled in a modified functional resume. This highlights capabilities in professional categories rather than chronological achievements. The Military Resume Writers System has been designed to be of value to both military personnel with no resume writing experience or experienced job seekers.

If you find that you are torn between two or more potential goals, set up different resumes for differing opportunities. Create a Resume that Speaks to Employers' Needs. Now that your objective is defined, you are ready to create a winning resume. Look at other people's resumes whenever you get the chance. Your Career plan should focus on designing your resume and cover letter to get the interview.

Because so many service people have diverse backgrounds, they often make the mistake of creating resumes that are too general to be effective. Readers should be immediately impressed with how different the presentation looks from military resumes they've read in the past and hopefully soon forget they are reading a military resume altogether. The first thing that a military transition resume sample will show you is that a hiring manager does not have very much time to look over resumes.

You will need to lay out your skill sets with the words and skill sets well defined to be spotted at a glance. Successful Military Resumes require special resume writing skills. This exceptional combination of military resumes writing skills and experience is now available to active duty and recently separated or retired military members at no additional cost. No doubt your military career is studded with accomplishments, but even the most decorated veteran needs to decide how to make the transition to a civilian position.

We should assume the Hiring Manager knows nothing about the military. We demilitarize your job titles, duties, accomplishments, training and awards in order to appeal to civilian hiring managers. Employers with no exposure to the military don't understand military terminology and acronyms, so we translate these into lay language. With some analysis and innovation, individuals making the transition from military to civilian careers can effectively position themselves as well-qualified, capable candidates.
And you are.
